Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. It is diagnosed through a combination of medical history, physical examination, neurological exams, and diagnostic tests such as electroencephalograms (EEGs) and imaging studies like MRI or CT scans.
Common triggers include lack of sleep, stress, flashing lights (photosensitivity), certain medications or foods, alcohol, hormonal changes, and illness or fever.
Epilepsy can be managed with anti-seizure medications, lifestyle modifications, dietary changes (like the ketogenic diet), and in some cases, surgery. Additional treatments may include vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) or responsive neurostimulation (RNS). Regular follow-ups with a healthcare provider are essential.
Stay calm and ensure the person is safe by moving objects away from them. Place them on their side to help keep the airway clear, and cushion their head if possible. Do not restrain their movements or put anything in their mouth. Time the seizure, and if it lasts longer than 5 minutes, seek emergency medical assistance.
Epilepsy can affect various aspects of daily life, including school or work performance, social interactions, and independence. It may also impact mental health, leading to conditions such as anxiety or depression. Access to support networks, counseling, and education about the condition can help manage these challenges.
At the Epilepsy Foundation, we help improve quality of life with early diagnosis, treatment, and management of neurological problems.
